The tech equivalent of taking friends out for dinner, then running away before the bill comes. Has the hyperscaler sensed financial winds changing? Token prices have indeed reached record lows, [reported CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/01/ai-token-prices-lows.html?ref=frenchtechjournal.com) and many others, due at least in part to the success of open-source Chinese models like Moonshot’s Kimi K3 (hello, Hugging NVIDIA!). A trend set to continue now even states are catching on to the true costs of frontier AI. French ministries’ IT spending has doubled since 2019, according to a government memo urging for more AI frugality, intercepted by [Les Echos](https://www.lesechos.fr/tech-medias/hightech/ia-bercy-invite-ses-prestataires-numeriques-a-revoir-leur-facture-a-la-baisse-2249512?ref=frenchtechjournal.com). *L’heure des comptes ?* Ma Bell may have got the memo already: AT&T has managed to reduce its AI costs by 56% since moving many of its systems to open source models, according to [The Information](https://www.theinformation.com/newsletters/applied-ai/t-using-open-source-models-curb-anthropic-bills?ref=frenchtechjournal.com), with only a 2% drop in ‘performance’ (which we presume means ‘accuracy’). And it’s not stopping there: the US telco is aiming for a 60-70% open source usage rate (v.s. closed models) in coming years. Then, after New York state’s move to [block data centers](https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/first-statewide-moratorium-new-hyperscale-data-centers-launched-governor-kathy-hochul?ref=frenchtechjournal.com), New York city elementary and middle schools banned AI, mayor Zohran Mamdani [announced this week](https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/09/mamdani-nyc-ai-ban-pause-moratorium-public-schools/?ref=frenchtechjournal.com). “The tech industry wants us to believe that AI in early education is not only inevitable, but that it is necessary,” he said. “We do not see it that way.” And finally, it was back-to-court for Uber, as drivers from the UK, Holland and other countries effectively [sued the ride-sharing company’s algorithm](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/sep/02/uber-drivers-europe-legal-action-ai-algorithm?ref=frenchtechjournal.com), for paying them different amounts for the same rides. The money is meant to fund frontier research, more compute and Mistral’s own infrastructure—an emphatic reply to questions over whether it had settled for inference. Mistral is still tiny beside OpenAI and Anthropic by American capital-market standards, but it has now nearly doubled its valuation in a year and helped push French startup funding past last year’s total.
