[Gallup](https://news.gallup.com/poll/709772/americans-oppose-data-centers-area.aspx?ref=frenchtechjournal.com); three times more than a year ago are now “strongly against” (i.e. even more “negative feelings”...). - The AI sector’s growing preference for data centers powered by gas generators will cause US grid emissions to rise by 20%, re. [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-18/data-center-gas-plants-to-boost-us-power-emissions-by-20?ref=frenchtechjournal.com); 82 such projects are already planned to come to fruition ([NY Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/06/briefing/data-centers-gas-power.html?ref=frenchtechjournal.com)). - One methane monstrosity in particular, Amazon’s GW Ranch in Texas, will spew out up to 33 million tonnes of CO2 per year, making it the US’ single biggest source of pollution, according to [Cleanview](https://newsletter.cleanview.co/p/scoop-amazon-is-behind-one-of-the?ref=frenchtechjournal.com). - But it’s not just the huge planetary cost: gas prices could more than triple in the not-too-distant future, re. [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/hyperscalers-might-regret-embracing-natural-gas-if-new-forecast-proves-correct/?ref=frenchtechjournal.com). - Data centers may use more than ten times as much water as they claim, re. [More Perfect Union](https://substack.perfectunion.us/p/everyone-is-fighting-about-the-wrong?ref=frenchtechjournal.com) (in Meta’s case, it’s [24x more](https://bettertech.blog/2026/06/12/does-sustainable-ai-have-a-future-heres-what-the-experts-think/?ref=frenchtechjournal.com); but they are curiously the only GAFAM to share their indirect water consumption, or the water used to make their electricity). Fortunately, Taylor Swift’s brother-in-law has a solution. Jason Kelce’s Garage Beer “[Let’s Pee on Computers Together](https://www.famouscampaigns.com/2026/08/liquid-death-want-your-pee-to-cool-ai-data-centres/?ref=frenchtechjournal.com)” ad was so successful that fans had to be reminded that its plea to send data centers the results of their beverage ingestion was just a joke. (More seriously) Fortunately, some companies are now tackling AI impacts head-on. EU logistics tech giant SAP is pre-screening every new internal AI project for its potential impacts - as does French telco Orange, for example - and has managed to reduce inference emissions per token by 60%, reports [Trellis](https://trellis.net/article/why-sap-screens-every-ai-project-for-ethical-and-environmental-risks/?ref=frenchtechjournal.com). Will that help stop summers packed with multiple heatwaves, forest fires, storms and tornadoes (as this year’s was, in France alone?) Meanwhile, Amazon’s naughty summer continued; it was rumbled for “destructively scanning” books, Anthropic-style; but this time on such an industrial scale that the division has its own logo. A dinosaur eating books… with two spines. 🙄 Then in Holland, Uber was fined $825 million for “algorithmic firing”, i.e. when workers dropped from the platform with no explanation or compensation, re. [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/dutch-regulator-fines-uber-966-million-automating-driver-suspensions-document-2026-08-21/?ref=frenchtechjournal.com). Only Meta has ever been fined more under GDPR, Europe’s data protection directive. Can EU law protect continental investors if and when the AI bubble bursts, however? Not likely, replied the [European Central Bank](https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/blog/date/2026/html/ecb.blog20260817~754a8a4418.en.html?ref=frenchtechjournal.com), which estimates that European households investing in “low-cost ETFs” are unaware they “have around €440 billion of exposures to US technology equities”. It’s a good job, then, that Sam Altman doesn’t think his industry has been “too ambitious”. We hope you enjoy revisiting them with us.*** [***We published this article on Mistral back in May this year.***](https://www.frenchtechjournal.com/mistral-ai-ceo-mensch-to-french-lawmakers-europe-has-two-years-to-stop-losing-the-ai-race-before-the-race-is-over/) --- Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch spent the better part of 90 minutes on May 12 explaining to a French parliamentary inquiry on digital sovereignty why the next 24 months will decide whether Europe gets to keep any meaningful share of the economic value AI is about to generate, or whether it will spend the next decade as a customer of American and Chinese suppliers. His framing was unambiguous. AI is not a category of digital services. It *is* digital services. The cloud business that European leaders keep talking about reviving is no longer about storage and virtual machines, which carry low margins and almost no leverage. It is about turning electricity into tokens, the unit of intelligence that customers now pay for. Whoever owns that conversion process owns the high-margin top of the value chain and can then work downwards into everything else. Whoever does not, ends up importing it. "Today, the cloud is artificial intelligence. The growth of the cloud is artificial intelligence," Mensch told the committee. From that follows a strategic conclusion he repeatedly returned to: Europe cannot rebuild a cloud industry by trying to compete on low-margin commodity services. It has to capture the high-margin AI layer first, then work down. "If you have no volume and no margin, you have no chance of reaching scale," he said. "You have to start from high-value services and work down toward low-level services, because those carry less margin."
