🧮 Data Point: Europe’s AI Surge
Europe’s venture market is showing some momentum, but the rebound comes with a giant asterisk: AI is doing the heavy lifting.
PitchBook's Q2 funding report says European startups raised €44 billion in the first half of 2026, putting the market on course for a 27.1% year-on-year increase if the pace holds. That is the good news. The more complicated part is how concentrated the recovery has become. Mega-rounds of €100 million or more accounted for 55.4% of all capital invested, despite representing just 1.8% of deals. In other words, the headline numbers look healthy, but a relatively small group of very large financings is carrying the market.
At the moment, that funding is spread across 4,012 deals in the first six months of 2026, compared with 9,847 for all of 2025. PitchBook typically revises those numbers up, but for now, Europe is on track for its 5th consecutive year of decline in terms of deal counts.

And then there is AI. The sector attracted €26.5 billion during the first half, already surpassing its total for all of 2025. AI deals accounted for 60.2% of European venture value, up from 37.8% last year, while the six largest rounds in the second quarter were all AI-related. AI is also spreading through the market rather than remaining confined to a handful of late-stage companies: nearly 40% of European VC deals now involve AI, with unusually large seed rounds helping push capital toward the earliest stages.
Europe is still nowhere near the United States, where AI accounts for 87.7% of venture value. The valuation gap is even more dramatic: the median European AI startup was valued at €8.3 million before funding, compared with €64.2 million in the US. PitchBook sees that disparity as runway rather than weakness.

Note: HR Path announced an €872.2m transaction that includes access to new debt and a recapitalization investment led by Ardian. Eurazeo, UBS and other secondary investors financed the recapitalization of Ardian’s existing stake, while HR Path separately secured €340 million of senior debt and a nearly €70 million revolving facility. It's unclear whether any new equity was raised as part of the transaction, so for now the deal is being treated primarily as a PE Buyout and is not included in this week's funding totals. | Ardian
